LAW6-1, Oeverloperpad, E 8: Europoort - Leerdam, 232 km
(Note: this trail is now called Grote Rivierenpad).
This is the ‘path of those who follow the riverbanks'. Well, not literally so. There will be long hours without a river in sight. But even where the river is not visible, it still has a strong influence on the land and the people living there. If you walk upstream, you will start from one of the centers of Dutch economy where logistics, petrochemical industry and agribusiness dominate the landscape. Somehow, the people who developed this trail did still manage to include fresh air, open spaces and traces of a pre-industrial history. This is true even if you are near Rotterdam, wich makes for an interesting experience. Further east you reach a more romantic scenery. Paradoxically here the trail can be somewhat crowded. This happens on spring weekends, when citydwellers flock to the countryside to watch the flowering fruit trees.
The Oeverloperpad, also known as LAW 6-1, leads from the Benelux Harbour Terminal in Europoort to the city of Leerdam, and coincides with the first Dutch section of European Long Distance Trail E8. You can also start from the harbour of Hoek van Holland and connect to the main route in Maasland. The main route then leads you slightly north and around the city of Rotterdam. There is an alternative route called the Groene Riviervariant taking a more southern direction along the Oude Maas river, meeting up with the main route again in a small forest called Loetbos. The main trail then leads further east along the Lek river until you reach Leerdam. Confused? Have a look at the map. (DB)
