Vatnajökull
Description
One can hardly imagine the size of the giant glacier Vatnajökull. Below it's 3.000 km3 of ice lie several volcano's. Eruptions cause enormous floods sweeping away roads, bridges and fertile land.
This glacier and a vast area around it, are declared national park, with a total size about one-third the Netherlands. Much of Iceland's active volcanic areas lie inside this park. The park authorities have set up many shorter and longer trails. Maps and information can be found at the parks head office in Reykjavík and the local visitor centres.
