Akshayuk Pass

Southern border of Ayuittuq National Park – Broughton Island, 100 km, 6 days

Formerly called Pangnirtung Pass

This is a real wilderness walk through a deserted and wild landscape of mountains and glaciers. The area is Baffin Island, Ayuittuq National Park, Northwest Territories. The path runs from coast to coast, following a beautiful valley and crossing Akshayuk Pass. Between June and August the pass will be snow free.

In order to accomplish this journey you must cross some glacial rivers, and this is not without danger. On the coast you run the small risk of a polar bear encounter. It is better to camp some kilometers inland to avoid this.

The park charges a daily admission fee. You will have to camp on your journey. Along the trail are emergency shelters, but they are not meant for regular stay.

If you think all this is worth the trouble, you will have an amazing trip in a remote part of our earth.
